Organic

IMG_8985

We support the cooperatives that we work with to follow organic practices and to seek out certification when it is a viable option for them. It is good for our customers, good for growers and their communities, and good for the land, water, and animals around them.

However, organic certification has a political side that needs to be addressed as well.

Organic certification normally takes up to 3 years and is incredibly costly for farmers. Growers making the commitment generally do not get any return for their expenses until the end of the third year putting them at a major disadvantage. Currently the USDA will not allow "transitional organic" on labels to let consumers know that they are buying a coffee from a farmer attempting to make the change and following good practices.

Think the USDA is being overly-stringent? Contact them and respectfully (por favor) let them know what you think.

Transitional organic coffee

I think as profesionals involved in the fair trade movement we must seek other ways to sell "transitional organic" not only in the USA but in other countries with emerging economies (China, Mexico, Brazil, Chile).

Coffee from El Salvador

Greetings,
I am interested in your plans/program to bring Salvadoran coffee to this part of the world. We members of St. Therese Catholic Church in Milwaukee have been sistering with a community in northern El Salvador since 1990, and we would like to work with them to open up a market for their crafts and coffee.

Additionally, I am a member of the Board of Directors of the Four Corners of the World Fair Trade Store in Milwaukee (www.fairtrademilwaukee.org). We currently carry your Just Coffee and it is great!

organic certification

Sounds a hit harsh that they don't let you sell organic food for 3 years. Hopefully you farmers want wait that long.

organic coffee

When you come to east timor in august 2008 you must come to SAME and stay at SAMATA backpackers ,built in 2007 for the yet to arrive tourists and owned by my friend Carlota Tavares ,ph.+6707276941, she is a local and speaks Tetun ,Inonesian, Mambai, Portuguese and English. Her uncle, jaime da costa, only got 80cents a kilo last year for his organic coffee , (this is truly 'ORGANIC' because they have never used chemicals to grow their coffee or anything else for that matter). The people are very friendly and the area is extremely beautiful with its mountains ,rivers, monkeys, unpolluted air ,rice paddies and surprisingly no mosquitoes. Thanks Paul

Great suggestion!

Thanks for the suggestion and contact information, Paul. I have been to Same a number of times but usually stay with friends. It would for sure be nice to check out the SAMATA backpackers. And, you are right, it is gorgeous in that area! Take good care and thanks very much for your positive contribution to our Just Coffee website. All the very best to you! ColleenInGreen
